Small Mom-and-Pop vs. Big Franchise - A Bubble Milk Tea Shop Case

Image
I went to have a bubbled milk tea after lunch yesterday. I had an opportunity talking to a small mom-and-pop bubble tea shop owner and the conversation was very interesting. She owned a local Singapore bubble tea shop in the HDB heartland and has been running it for over 10 years at the same location. Over the time, her business affected a lot due to some reasons. One of them is the newly operated MRT station. She claimed that she used to see many students from a nearby secondary school patronize her premise last time, but once a new MRT station operated with new popular franchise bubble tea kiosk open there, she hardly sees students from that same school anymore. Based on my observation, I totally agreed with her. 5 years ago when I was working nearby, my colleagues and me used to drink at her bubble tea shop during lunch break, and we used to see a lot of secondary school students hanging around the void deck in front of the shop. But now, it seems to be a little quiet. Th...

Building My Own Business Website

Image
Here are the things I did to build my business website. A few considerations required to take note before building my website: Develop from scratch, use a template, or use some online website-builder tool. Of course, it has to be mobile friendly now. So HTML5, CSS3, responsive design flat UI are the most important or in my opinion, a must-have features for a website nowadays. Some simple backend coding language to adopt. PHP, .Net, Java or etc. Whether I need to have a database or not which I don't need it at this moment. Which method did I employ? At first, I am looking at some free online website-builder tool. The domain name provider, 1and1.com  has a built-in tool for those who totally know nothing about coding or HTML to easily design and build their website and host there directly, for free. However, after a few clicks exploring the tool, I gave up using it. First, it's not easy for me to drag and drop to design and build the website. Secondly, their w...

All the registration stuff

All the thing about registration, from business name to domain name to getting a business name card. Actually I have done all these in a couple of weeks ago and again wanting to post it here. The business name was kind of a bit troublesome when you have no name in your mind at the first place. The small business that I want to do is something related to social media consultation. Bring on the 'social media' name and you will see thousands of social media agencies from Google. After a few hours of searching, I gave up, not worth the time spending on looking for those fancy positive words that still not link to 'social' or 'media'. So the best and simplest way, use your own name. And thus, 'Media Kuan Consulting' was born.  Buying the domain name was easy and super cheap. So I bought both www.mediakuan.com and www.mediakuanconsulting.com with the intention of linking or redirecting to the main name (which I will decide later when my website can go ...

Learning reflection on the first discussion of the business plan

I was discussing my first business model with my future or potential co-partner and as expected there were still many vague areas which he can't convince with my idea. After that, I tried to reflect on the main concerns and here's the list.  How to exactly extract/mine the data? Who is our actual targeted customers/ who will use our product? Who will really buy our product and why they should buy it? What is the detail work flow or process flow that your product is going through and how it actually works and will it really works? What is a clear value proposition of our product offering to our customers? As I tried to figure out the answer to those concerns, I think the main problem of my initial idea proposition was that t he problem is not clear, or probably there is no problem to solve at all. I n eed to define a clear product market fit and the minimum viable product. Although, Google can give me answer about what is a product market fit and what is minimum v...

The Journey Continues

It came to my surprise that, for more than 2 years I have not update my blog here about my MBA journey, there were some visitors based on the stats. I am not sure if they are just the google robots or are real people. But I will still continue writing something on this blog.  As I might be graduating soon with the MBA from the University of Strathclyde Business School, my learning does not ends here. I will try to write up more on my learning and reflection be it in business, entrepreneurship, startup as well as relationship. For about 3 years I embarked on the MBA program (it was supposed to be ended in 2 years but due to many reasons it was dragged), the journey was extremely tiring, challenging, emotionally-disturbing but with fun, awe-inspiring, motivating, great learning experience gained. The 3 years of silence here also means that I might not be a good blogger as I find blogging requires tremendous amount of dedication, discipline and courage. Again, I hope to write...
